2013-01-31Hui’an has remained many excellent stone sculptures since the ancient time. The earliest sculptures are the General Stone and Sheep Stone in front of the tombstone of Linlu, who was the chief of Jinan,Fujian, at the year of 356 AD. After that, Hui’an stone is famous for the group lion stone sculptures of LuoYang Bridge in the Northern Song Dynasty and the East Tower and the West Tower in the Kaiyuan Temple, Quanzhou, in the Southern Song. Another masterpiece is the ancient city of Chongwu which is built with large stones in the Ming Dynasty. Hui’an stone sculpture develops year by year during thousands of years. In the Ming Dynasty, its main features are figure sculptures and animal sculptures and the art style is sketchy and simple. During the late Ming and early Qing Periods, the Hui’an stone sculpture is characterized with sophisticated and delicated craftsmanship. It was a period of connecting link between preceding and the following. Till Qing Dynasty, Hui’an stone craftsmanship developed greatly and the method of Round Hollow carving appeared. The craftsmen carved the stone into the artistic life and soul. Especially for the Stone Dragon Sculpture and the Stone Lion Sculpture, obviously, they are given full expression of delicacy of lines and the beauty of shape. The representative works are the two Curling Dragon Pillars in the Yu Mountain and a pair of lion stone sculptures in front of the Yongquan Temple in the Gu Mountain in Fuzhou.
